The problem of costs of higher education in on the headlines for some time. In Poland university education is free, unless for weekend and evening students. Every year the government is paying unbelievable amounts of money for hundreds of students while thousands are paying for themselves. It is obvious this state cannot last, that it has to change, but which way should we go? Should the government pay for all the students, or for none of them?
First of all, our government can not afford paying for all the students. And why should it? Almost half of them (or even more) are working and they could afford paying for their education.
On the other hand, should not the country support the brightest ones the ones that want to study, to learn more and become in future the governing elite? Surely, it should. And that is we have scholarships for. Most recently, they were made available for all the students.
Further issue is that, from weekend and evenings students money most of the new buildings and properties of the universities are built and kept. They are the ones that really support higher education in Poland, not the government. Would not it be better to make every student to pay at least a part of money that is spent every year on their education?
The answer is not easy, but looking at our foreign friends example United States, where higher education is mostly private and every student has to pay, it is functioning very well. Thus, following that example, I must state that university education should be paid, for all.
